This is one of the stormiest times of year in Dallas, Texas. But what you heard coming out of the Las Colinas/Irving part of town Monday night, was no brutal Texas storm. It was two of my favorite bands with two totally different sounds, Gojira and Deftones. This great night of metal happened at the Toyota Music Factory in Irving, Tx.

It’s been a little bit of a rollercoaster ride as everything tries to return to normal after the past couple of years. The world of live music, in particular, is trying its best to get bands and fans into the same room once again. We’ve seen tours delayed, moved, or even canceled, and Baroness hasn’t been an exception to any of that. Originally scheduled to roll through Dallas in March, Baroness decided to postpone the 2nd leg of their intimate shows for a couple of weeks due to the rise of Omicron. On top of that, thanks to the lovely Dallas fire marshals that have been poking around and causing headaches in Deep Ellum, the show had to be moved across the street from Three Links over to Trees. But even with all the moving around and rescheduling, last night Baroness proved that good things come to those who wait. Really, really good things!

Those loud noises coming from Irving, on the evening of July 3rd, wasn’t premature firework celebrations for ‘Merica. It was the muses of the Unheavenly Skye Tour. And the culprits of all the noise complaints made that night was Coheed and Cambria, Every Time I Die, and Mastodon. This guitar-driven shindig went down at the Toyota Music Factory.

Fortress Fest is an annual destination festival that takes place in the heart of Fort Worth’s Arts District. Now in its 3rd year, Fortress Fest has become a well oiled machine and a staple for the month of April. Once again it featured bands from all over the world, but also shined a heavy spotlight on homegrown Texas bands, including the Sunday night headliner Leon Bridges. With sold out crowds both days, there’s no question it will make it return next year.

On Sunday night I had the honor to catch Baroness in concert with tour mates Deafheaven and Zeal & Ardor. This show was at Canton Hall, in Deep Ellum. It was an evening of cross-genre live music, with the exception of Baroness. These three musical performances were very different. But the one thing they all had in common is creativity.

Back in May, I met Juma Spears while doing a podcast from Eagle Audio during the recording of Frequencies Volume 9, Fort Worth Weekly's yearly awards show cd. The next day he sent me a message and told me about a crazy idea he had to do a multi-genre show. Juma wanted to put together a line up where people who would normally go to one of his hip-hop shows would hear metal, and someone that would go see a Fort Worth rock band would hear something kind of quirky. He asked if I could help make this happen and so we set to work.

Mastodon and Primus at South Side Ballroom, Dallas TX.

If there are two perfect matched bands to be on an early summer bill, Mastodon and Primus would be it. These two great bands played on Thursday night at the South Side Ballroom in Dallas, Texas. There was a third band that opened called, All Them Witches, but a stalled El Camino with a sweet wolf sunset decal on the tailgate kept us from getting to the venue in time for them.

In an era of bands playing to synced video back drops and lights, the stage set up was pretty basic, with just a few flexible LED poles placed strategically around the stage. Having a stripped down setup like this allows for the band to change up their setlist from night to night. While the majority of the songs on the setlist came from from Villains, the eighteen song set covered the entire catalog, including the fan requested Mexicola. As a fan that has seen them on eight separate occasions, I will say this wasn't my favorite set of songs they have done, but that just makes me want to catch them somewhere else this summer.

Bret was the former lead singer of Poison and a staple of the 80’s LA Sunset scene, now he’s on the road with his “Party Starts Now” solo tour. He’s backed by the appropriately named Bret Michaels Band that includes Shawn Hugues on drums, former Cinderella bassist Eric Brittingham, and Jamie Laritz on guitar. The set consisted of Poison classics like “Talk Dirty To Me”, “Your Mama Don’t Dance”, “Every Rose Has It’s Thorn”, and “Nothin But A Good Time” as well as covers of “Sweet Home Alabama” and the Sublime classic “What I Got”.

This is a preview of the galleries I'll be posting of the 2017-2018 season with the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders.
This game was shot with the Sony a7rIII that Sony sent over for me to test drive. AT&T Stadium is always a little tricky to shoot in, add to that the fast action of the cheerleaders doing their routines and you have a fun environment to put the a7RIII through the paces.
